July 2022. Code Red II — the swell that shut down Tahiti, flooded the south shore of Maui, and arrived in California with four days of unbroken surf from sunrise to sunset. I was living in Malibu. I’d spent fifteen years photographing waves and thirty years surfing them, and I had never seen the elements align like this: a south swell of this size, this clean, this consistent, breaking down one of the most iconic point waves on earth. Hundreds of surfers in the lineup. Sets stacking to the horizon. Lines running for hundreds of yards down the point.
This is the frame that holds it. Shot from directly above, you can see the wave for what it actually is from the water — geometry, current, the strange order inside the chaos. It’s the image I come back to when I want to remember that moment.
